CE & ECE marking

CE & ECE marking

We use CE & ECE markings to show that your items meet the safety, health, and environmental requirements. This marking is even required for most items sold in the European Union (EU).

Is CE marking required for you?

CE marking is required for items in the following product groups (note: this does not mean you can sell all these items via bol).

  • Pyrotechnic items (all firework-related items)
  • Construction items
  • Toys
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Electrical, electronic and energy-related items
  • Medical devices (note: in addition to CE marking, extra conditions apply. You can read more in this news article and the Medical Devices policy)
  • Measuring and weighing equipment
  • Machines, safety components, lifting and hoisting equipment, as well as chains and cables
  • Means of transport

Is ECE marking also required for you?

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities depend on your role. Are you the importer, distributor, or manufacturer? You can check whether CE marking is required for your item(s) in this overview from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). It’s your responsibility to determine whether the items you sell need CE marking.

Productinformation CE marking

1. Existing articles

Fill in the ‘CE marking’ product information. You’ll find this under mandatory information in your seller account. You can use a drop-down menu to indicate that the CE marking is ‘Visible’. It can be on your item, on your item’s packaging, or in your item’s manual. If your item isn’t subject to CE regulations, you can select ‘Not applicable’ here. We’ll then check this at bol. You don’t have to upload a photo for your existing range.

2. New articles

There’s an additional rule for new items that don’t have product information available yet. You must have a PDF file available of the CE marking as it appears on the item.
You can find instructions and examples for adding CE marking here.

3. The trade name and contact address of the manufacturer or importer in Europe.

We ask you to fill in the ‘Trade name and contact address of manufacturer or importer in EU’ field for your existing and your new items. You’ll find this under mandatory information in the seller account. Here, you enter the name and contact address of the manufacturer or importer in the EU. The information you enter isn’t visible on bol and we don’t look for the purchasing channel. You’re simply confirming that the information you’ve entered is also visible/present on the item or packaging.

2. New articles

If no product information is available for a new item, you must upload a photo (JPEG or PDF file type) of the ECE marking on the item. If this isn’t technically possible, a photo of the ECE marking on the packaging or in the manual is also sufficient. To add the ECE marking, you can use the CE marking instructions, which you can find here.

How do you use CE & ECE marking?

You can recognise CE marking by the familiar CE symbol: around logo with an E in the middle, usually found on an orange sticker. The sticker must be affixed directly to the item or to the data plate on the item. Sometimes it’s not technically possible to attach a CE marking directly to the item. In that case, you can also attach the CE marking to the item’s packaging or an accompanying document (you can find the correct image here).

What if you don’t meet these requirements?

The (safety) rules are legally determined. This means you must be able to demonstrate that you have the necessary (E)CE marking(s). This is important, because otherwise you’re breaking the law. If you don’t comply with bol’s policy, we’ll take your item offline. This prevents customers from being put at risk by potentially unsafe items.
