Protect your product information for brands and licenses

Selected brand owners, BOIP registered suppliers with licensed products, and official distributors have the opportunity to take control over the product information for their own branded and licensed items. This product information can then no longer be modified by third parties through product information protection. This ensures that branded and licensed items are presented consistently across the platform. This is useful, as millions of customers shop on bol and come into contact with branded and licensed items. Product information protection applies to the product description, title, specifications, and images.

Your benefits at a glance

  • Regular checks on product information are a thing of the past.
  • Your brand is presented consistently everywhere, ensuring a logical and clear presentation.
  • Thanks to your registration as a brand owner, we can act more quickly in case of issues.

How to know if this is (not) for you

Product information protection has clear benefits. Please note, however, that any product information you have ever submitted for your branded or licensed items – including information that is currently not shown – will automatically become visible on the website retroactively. This product information protection applies to all of your branded or licensed items. This also includes items you may no longer sell yourself but that are still offered by other parties. All this product information must therefore be up to date and correct.

When is product information protection not a suitable option for you?

  • If the product information previously submitted to bol is no longer up to date and you do not have the capacity to update it. For example, titles from two years ago may be shown if that is the most recent title submitted via your supplier account.
  • For licensed items: if your supplier name does not have a BOIP registration.

Images

Images are also covered by product information protection:

  • Images added by brand owners are shown first, provided they have the correct labels (for example, “front view”).
  • Per label, images from non brand owners are shown after the brand owner’s images (for example: if both you and other parties upload a “front view,” your front view will be shown first; if you do not upload a “side view,” that label remains available for other parties).
  • Please note: if, as a brand owner, you change the label of an image that was not added by you, it will not be shown first. Make sure to upload all images yourself to benefit fully from brand ownership.

Requirements

Products are offered in accordance with our standard brand and license guidelines, of which the following three conditions are the most important:

  1. EAN – Every branded item must have an EAN. This EAN must be registered with GS1 in the name of the brand owner. This number ensures that the item is unique compared to other products.
  2. Brand register – A branded item may only be offered if it is genuinely a branded product. In other words, it must be a product from a brand registered with BOIP under the class appropriate to the product type. The BOIP brand register may also include a reference to the WIPO (internationally recognized) or EUIPO (European Union) register; this reference is also sufficient.
Please note: if the product does not have its own brand name (as is the case with licensed items), you must use the supplier’s brand name. For example, if you sell Harry Potter dolls, you do not manage the brand name Harry Potter, as this is the license and brand protection is not possible for it since it can be sourced by anyone. This is possible for your BOIP registered supplier name. You therefore apply for protection under that name and enter it in the brand field (for example: Mattel). Harry Potter should then be entered in the character attribute.
  3. Brand visibility – The brand must be visible on the original product packaging or on the item itself, and it must also be visible in one or more product images on the bol product page.
