How to set climate targets?
Climate target setting
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a partnership between CDP, UN Global Compact, WWF and the World Resources Institute. The partnership drives ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling organisations to set science-based emission reduction targets. Organisations can apply at SBTi for their climate targets to be validated and approved. All companies taking action, including our parent company Ahold Delhaize, are stated on the SBTi dashboard. We ask you to commit by 31 December 2026* if you are not already committed.
Signing the SBTi commitment letter
The SBTi commitment process can be started by registering here. For small and medium-sized companies, we recommend using SBTi’s streamlined SME route, available here. Here you can find the frequently asked questions about SBTi services for small and medium-sized companies.
The SBTi Academy is a useful resource to learn more about the target-setting process.
Next steps after SBTi commitment
After signing and submitting the commitment letter, you will have 24 months to calculate your organisational carbon footprint (Scope 1-2 and Scope 3) and to develop and submit climate targets in line with the 1.5°C global warming scenario. Next steps:
- Develop your target in line with SBTi’s science-based criteria
- Submit your target for validation
- Announce your target and inform stakeholders
- Disclose your emissions annually and monitor progress
* These deadlines do not apply to our Not for Resale (NFR) suppliers. However, we encourage all suppliers to set science-based targets.

Guidance documents
For companies with a significant share of revenue from Forestry, Land-use and Agriculture (FLAG), the SBTi has created a sector-specific guidance (FLAG guidance), available here.
